A Flag Salute to Life.

At the hospital where I work, whenever a patient dies and donates their organs, a flag is raised for them. One life for another: we honor you.

Hey friends! I’m super excited: My book is going to be released in exactly five months, on May 5th 2020. Home stretch! Soon I’ll be launching a book campaign where you can get an advance copy of the book, plus I’ll be live on webcam to meet you, answer questions, possibly present my dog. If you’d definitely like to be part of the group, please message me your email! Next year in April, I’ll be going to Chicago to give a chapel message at the Moody Bible Institute. And in May, I’ll be at the NY BookExpo in the Javits Center, at a stand with my publisher. Hopefully I’ll get to meet you in Chicago or NY! (Sorry, my dog has other plans. He’s a midnight yodeler back in Florida.) I would love your prayers during this time. Writing a book is crazy hard. This is on top of a wild full-time job, part-time job, marriage, and yep, my dog. Totally not complaining, it’s all a blessing. But I humbly ask for prayers of strength and rest. Thank you in advance, truly. Please let me know how I may pray for you, too. You need to know: Each of you helped to make this book happen with your constant presence and kind words. Thank you. I’ve learned so much from your stories and comments and dialogue, especially on our Friday questions. God bless friends, and much love to each of you. — J.S. @moodypublishers @moodybible @bookexpo #books #thevoiceswecarry #published #jspark #moodybibleinstitute #northfield #author #thankyou #typewritertherapy #chicago #newyork #bookexpo #

I’ve recently come across so many people unwilling to learn that I’m honestly losing my mind a little. I’d like to think I don’t get upset easily, but I’ve been getting cynical, sour, and jaded. And I’m sure I’ve been the same stubborn guy who was unwilling, unteachable, crossing arms and huffing and puffing and resistant to new wisdom. I was put in charge of a training which is required for the type of work I do. It’s to protect our clients, guests, and workers. But there has been one type of person who has been completely obnoxious about the training: clergy. Pastors. Church leaders. Religious folks. I have had people walk out of the training, stamping their feet, saying things like “I’ve been a pastor for twenty years, I don’t need this.” I kept wondering: Am I teaching this wrong? Is it because I’m Asian? Or younger? Or my theology is weird? I have tried my best to put on a humble face, talk lightly, and even apologize a million times with a million disclaimers. Still, these pastors look like they will literally explode in their chairs. Here’s my theory. My guess is that some “religious people” believe they only need the Bible and nothing else for knowledge. Or that their ministry experience supersedes any new ideas. Or that “wisdom perishes with us.” This is true not just for the religious, but for anyone who is obstinate in their subculture, whether their social media tribe or political camp. When we reinforce our own in-group, we consider any outside information as an invasion against our members, a threat to the baseline, a disturbance to our invested positions. So a thing like “required training” is a hit to the ego. I’ve been there. It’s not easy to be teachable. But every time I have laid down my ego, I have become better. Fuller. A more whole person. My ideas have been challenged and reformed. It’s always better. Sure, it’s hard to sit in the rookie seat, and not every idea is worth hearing. But I hope to remain a lifetime student, because the world is bigger than my limited sight. I need the vision of others to see. #typewritertherapy #humility #encouragement #religion #politics #jspark #typography #lettering #growth #behumble #Christianity
