“Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.”
— C.S. Lewis
One of my absolute favorite quotes by our brother Lewis.

I like the quote, but here’s my confession: When I hear the phrase “rely on God”, I have no idea what you’re supposed to be doing when you do it.

I have the same difficulty as well. One thing I’ve learned is that I’m always relying on something, whether it’s the validation of others or my success or my looks or my bank account, and these cannot be ultimate sustainable motivations. I have to rely on a permanent source of affirmation, encouragement, and love, deeply rooted in God’s opinion of me, so that I might move into confidence in this harrowing world. It’s a difficult reality to ascertain sometimes, but without it, I’m too easily swayed and crushed by my results and performance. Almost like a friend I call for comfort when I fail, so I have an eternal friend who backs me up when the bottom falls out. He is reliable. I’m sure there’s more to glean from such a huge truth, but that’s how I partially understand relying on Him: knowing that we can at all.
