Book Review: Lifted

Lifted
By Sam Allberry

Summary:
Most sermons and books on the resurrection are about the proofs and circumstances surrounding it, but really there is little material about the implications of Jesus rising from the grave. If you took a minute to explain what it actually does in your daily life, you may be surprised to find how difficult it is to articulate. Sam Allberry does an incredible job detailing the cosmic and personal scope of the resurrection that unpacks this neglected truth of the Gospel. Keeping it biblical with offbeat humor, Allberry’s engaging wit and urgent style will reaffirm and even re-instruct what you thought you already knew.

Note: The book is currently not sold in the U.S. and I purchased it from a bookstore in the UK. I highly recommend getting a copy even if you must pay a little extra for shipping. Altogether it cost about ten dollars.

Strengths:
The four points are simple: the resurrection gives us assurance, transformation, hope, and a mission. At 142 pages, the book is not longer than it needs to be. Sam Allberry also has a razor wit, using creative illustrations that drew me in and even had me laughing loudly. If you’re a pastor, there are at least a few illustrations here that will come in handy.

One-Armed Surfing Star Bethany Hamilton on Trusting God
“Bethany Hamilton, one of the top female surfers in the world despite having only one arm, proclaims in a new video that God can change tragic events into opportunities to glorify Himself.
In an ‘I Am Second’ video released Tuesday, Hamilton recalls how she climbed back on her surf board after only a month following her near fatal collision with a shark that bit off her left arm. By her third try, the then 13-year-old was able to ride the wave all the way back to the beach.
And just two years later, the one-armed Hamilton took first place at the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) National Championship in 2005.”

Taco rage: Man upset at burrito price rise fires shots
“A Taco Bell drive-through customer who became enraged because of a price increase on Beefy Crunch Burritos fired a BB gun through the window at a manager on Sunday, police said.”

Facebook Flub: Man Charged with Polygamy After Posting Second Wedding Photo Online
“When photos of Barton and his new Michigan wife turned up on Facebook, his old (but still current) wife, living in Rhode Island, took issue with Barton. She alerted authorities, who arrested Barton for polygamy.
The saga started in 2004 when Barton married the R.I. woman. Months later, Barton mysteriously failed to return home one evening, leaving his wife clueless as to his whereabouts. He was behind bars and not to return home, well, ever.”

Refused a kiss, 92-year-old woman fires gun: police
“Helen Staudinger, 92, wanted a kiss, and authorities say she wouldn’t take no for an answer.
The central Florida woman fired a semi-automatic pistol four times at her 53-year-old neighbor’s house after he refused to kiss her, police said on Tuesday.
‘If my head would have been over just a little bit further, (a bullet) probably would have hit me in the back of the head,’ the neighbor, Dwight Bettner, told Reuters.”
